Halloween Hunter Pace
By Lauren Pigford
The sun was shining with a little breeze and the perfect, not too hot, not too cold temperature for riding. However, instead of a typical Hunter Pace day kids and adults showed up in creative, funny, and original Halloween costumes. Horses wore Indian Paint, halos, different colored polo wraps and rode through Ann and Carl Kimberlin’s beautiful property in Olive Branch, MS on Sunday, October 25th.
Every year the Nashoba Carriage Association has a driving Halloween party for the junior drivers. This year the Carriage Association teamed up with barn members of Kimberlin Farms and created a Halloween Hunter Pace for those who wanted to ride and a Halloween Hustle Marathon drive for those who wanted to drive.
The Hunter Pace riders enjoyed a course spread over 6 miles. Along the way there were optional, natural and cross country jumps, trails through woods, a maze cut through tall grass, and open, rolling hills to canter through. The Carriages took a separate course through a maze, and open, rolling hills as well. There was even a mimosa stand at the half way mark for the carriage drivers.
Once all of the riders and drivers finished their courses they then sat down to enjoy the beautiful weather and a delicious Barbeque meal. Prizes were handed out to the top Hunter Pace teams and the top Carriage drivers. A best costume award was then given once all of the volunteers and coordinators decided on the best dressed. It was a day filled with fun, laughter, and all different types of horses. People with different horse backgrounds and disciplines all came together to celebrate Halloween and the perfect weather.
Welcome Becky & John Bowers, and their four-legged friends, Flap & Snip!

It's again been a busy and fun year at Kimberlin Farms. Our indoor arena has been put to great use this year once again! Last winter, we hosted numerous carriage clinics, natural horsemanship, and dressage clinics. Our junior driving camp taught by Joanna Wilburn, was once again a huge success! That clinic helped prepare several brand new junior drivers for the Junior Driving class at the Germantown Charity Horse Show!
Alas, we had some losses, as our beloved barn piggies passed on to "piggy heaven" and we all mourned the loss of "T!" We have some new arrivals though, such as Petunia the bunny rabbit, Buddy and Duke the newest barn dogs... or "Traveling Men" as Mrs. Kimberlin likes to call them. Fefe the rescued miniature horse is doing awesome and still rules the roost, and Mrs. Kimberlin has nursed her newest rescue horse, Popeye back to stellar health. This old guy is truly an inspiration! Literally a bag of bones with a horrible raw saddle sore he came to the farm, in a few months time this guy is unrecognizable- meaning he looks amazing! He is being trail ridden and loves every minute of it.
Here's Popeye when he arrived at the Farm- half starved, and horribly neglected with a horrible open saddle sore that hadn't been treated:

Thanks to Mrs. Kimberlin's generousity, this "useless" horse was rescued from a certain death! The Kimberlin Farm gang is having loads of fun spoiling this sweet guy! And the cherry on top, is that he is turning into an awesome riding horse! He is being ridden both western and english, on trail rides and in the rings. He has even been used in several lessons with some of our new riders- who love him! Popeye is the proof, that just because a horse is old, doesn't mean they aren't useful! It also doesn't excuse the horrible condition that he came to us in!
Several of our "teenagers" are growing up and have gone off to college this year. Tippy Adams is a freshman at Mississippi State, and Kay Calandrucio is at Ole Miss. Both are enjoying college life and while we miss seeing them every day, they come back to visit us often. But, never fear, Nora is still here! We have a new "crop" of young riders on the horizon though! We've started several enthusiastic young riders out this year who are "hooked on ponies!
2007 Update:
Kimberlin Farms has had a busy 2007! The farm now has a fantastic indoor arena, complete with great footing, lighting, and a fabulous new sprinkler system. All planned and masterfully constructed by Mr. Carl Kimberlin.
Now, we are able to train year-round, regardless of the weather! The ponies may not be so thrilled about this....
Also in June, 2007 the Driving My Buggy Carriage Camp was hosted for a second year. This camp was once again a huge success. Being even more successful than the previous year. Due to the camp's success, and the obvious interest and demand for and about carriage driving in the Midsouth area, Kimberlin Farms will no doubt continue to host more junior and adult carriage driving opportunities in 2008!
We participated in several driving events and horse shows this year. Including the Germantown Charity Horse Show, 2007 Nashoba Carriage Classic, The National Drive in Lexington, KY, and the Halloween Hustle.
